From Ottawa to Indianapolis: A Road Trip to Employee Ownership Insights

When the Firefly Insights team hit the road, we weren’t just headed to another conference. This was a 13-hour journey from Ottawa to Indianapolis—crossing borders, counting rest stops, and curating the perfect playlist as we made our way to the 2024 Fall Forum hosted by the NCEO. With snacks in hand, passports ready, and a thirst for knowledge, we set off, eager to immerse ourselves in the world of employee ownership.

Upon arriving in Indianapolis, often referred to as the “Crossroads of America,” it became clear that the journey was symbolic. Like navigating highways, employee ownership is a path full of twists and turns, but with the right map, you can find yourself on a road that leads to success.

While employee ownership operates a little differently south of the border, the big ideas remain the same: empowerment, resilience, and, most importantly, people.

We met a diverse group of people—from those just beginning to explore employee ownership to seasoned veterans who have run employee-owned businesses for years. Here’s a snapshot of what we took away from the experience:

  1. Employee Ownership is a Cultural Shift
    It is not just about shares, dividends, or trusts. For employee-owned companies to thrive, there needs to be a mindset shift. When employees feel a sense of ownership, companies experience higher retention rates and greater resilience, especially in tough economic times.
  2. Purpose Drives Performance
    Employee ownership is not a magic fix unless employees truly understand their purpose. When employees see how their individual contributions directly impact the business, that is when the real benefits of employee ownership start to unfold.
  3. Communication is Key
    Education and communication are critical during the transition. Owners need to communicate not just the mechanics of employee ownership but also the value of ownership thinking. When employees buy into the concept, they will be more engaged and, ultimately, more productive.
  4. Participation Equals Profitability
    The more employees participate in ownership, the more profitable the business becomes. Ownership goes beyond financial benefits—it is about creating a culture where employees feel invested in the company’s success.

The common thread woven throughout the conference sessions was that employee ownership is about much more than financials. It is about creating a culture where employees embrace their role as owners. But that mindset shift doesn’t happen overnight. It requires guidance, patience, and a commitment to open communication from leadership.

We left the forum not only with new knowledge but also a renewed sense of purpose. Employee ownership can be a game-changer, but it takes careful planning to get it right. There are many moving pieces to consider, and each business is unique.
